Coach Kent Johnston has recently accepted a new position as the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach at the University of Alabama. He joined the Crimson Tide with 23 years of experience in strength and conditioning, including 17 years of National Football League experience. Johnston originally joined Head Coach Mike Holmgren in Green Bay where he served in a similar capacity from 1992-98. One of his primary duties entailed the rehabilitation of injured players, while also serving as a resource for developing nutrition programs that varied for each individual. A unique aspect of Johnston's conditioning program has been the coordination of karate and yoga classes during the offseason to increase both cardiovascular capacity and coordination. In 1997, Johnston was honored as "Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Year" by the Professional Football Strength and Conditioning Coaches' Society. Prior to joining the Packers, Johnston spent five years (1987-91) in the weight room of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he was hired by Head Coach Ray Perkins. From 1983-86, he was a member of Ray Perkins' University of Alabama staff where he helped develop a number of NFL players. Johnston began his coaching career at Teague High School in Texas (1978) before entering the collegiate ranks at Northwestern (La.) State (1979). He spent two years at Northeast Louisiana (1980-81) and one year at Willis High in Texas (1982) before joining the Crimson Tide staff. A graduate of Stephen F. Austin where he played defensive back, Johnston earned his Master's Degree in Physical Education from Alabama in 1984. Born February 21, 1956, in Mexia, Texas, Kent and his wife, Pam, have four sons, Kody (5/30/90), Kole (5/7/92), Clay (8/8/96) and Cade (6/24/98). (Click
