What is wrong with traditional weight training machines?

  • There are two distinct classes of machine: Functional resistance strength machines, whose purpose is to offer resistance in sport specific patterns.
  • Non-functional resistance strength machines, whose sole purpose is to offer general resistance in non-sport specific patterns.

An appreciation of this distinction is vital for many coaches and athletes because the impressive fitness centers in which they often train are usually entirely equipped with non-functional resistance machines. While the use of Non-functional machines may be adequate for the casual fitness client, it can be profoundly counter-productive for sport specific trainees if used in place of Functional strength machines. The serious athlete should become aware of their limitations in sport and rehabilitation, particularly regarding the detrimental effects they can have on;

  1. Specificity of fitness.
  2. Proprioceptive efficiency
  3. Central nervous programming
  4. Sporting skills
